When Life Throws a Lot at You, Remember This

It seems like every day I do the same thing. Faucet on. Water in. Don’t go over the line or something terrible might happen!

I fill my coffee maker up regularly – sometimes multiple times a day. Each time I do, I notice a line with two little words that say “max fill”. To be honest, I’m not sure what happens if you cross the line. I’ve tried really hard not to cross the line, because I want my coffee brewer to work.

But a few years ago I thought about something as I paid careful attention to the “max fill” warning and tried hard not to go over it.

There’s no “max fill” with God.

I wonder if sometimes we don’t treat God like my coffee maker. We feel like there’s a limit – a line we shouldn’t cross. We think it might be okay to ask God for some things or to seek Him some times, but to come to Him any time or talk to Him about any thing? Not so much.

In Psalm 34 the writer records,

I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.” Psalm 34:4

We can never ask too much, talk too much or need too much from God.

In the last few weeks the flu has crept its way through my house and illness has gripped some of our extended family as well. Daily routines have gone array and we’re still playing catch up on a lot of things. But knowing that there is no limit or boundary to God’s presence or our seeking Him has kept me afloat through these days … and also through days far more intense than these. Here are just a few of the things I’ve found:

When we seek God we find rest.

In His presence we find strength.

He’s our quiet place to find retreat.

When we seek the Lord, we find hope.

God’s love and peace and complete fulfillment are not found in a container that can be filled too high.

God wants to hear from you today, friend. It’s never too small or too often. And you will never reach capacity in His riches. In fact, just a few verses later in Psalm 34, David invites us,

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!” Psalm 34:8

What are you trying to handle on your own today? When life throws a lot at you remember, there’s no “max fill” with God. You can always feast on His Word and in His presence.
