The Best Plan for the Future {and a free printable}

Sometimes it’s hard to stay focused on today. I’d rather look ahead and try to make everything work out my way.

But my attempts to control or contain the future always cause me trouble.

When the days in front of me hold promise, I want to run ahead of God and get there faster. But my efforts only entangle me in a self-imposed frenzy. When the future looks uncertain or scary, I can live each day frozen in fear. Neither of these are my favorite options.

But how can we move our focus from what may (or may not) be ahead?

I’ve decided my best plan for the future is to be faithful today.

Invested. Focused. Faithful. Today. Because when I concern myself with the moment right in front of me – the task to complete or the relationship to nurture. The friend to pray for or even the dishes to clean, my moments become more like worship.

And when my daily moments turn into worship, my heart begins to overflow. My focus on the present begins to distract me from my worry of the future.

So today, I remind myself, my best plan for the future is to be faithful with today.

The heart of man plans his way,
    but the Lord establishes his steps.” Proverbs 16:9

  1. This really spoke to me today. I’ve been teaching and studying for several months now on living moment by moment with God. Praying throughout the day – “God, what are you doing now? In this situation? What is it you need me to do or say in this moment?”

  2. A good reminder to “trust” the plan that the Lord has prearranged for and made ready for us to live. Ephesians 2:10
