Newlyweds and Communication
One night during our stay in Tampa, Florida, Luke and I watched NFL Total Access. As the show started the host said something about all the quarterbacks in Tampa Bay.
I turned to Luke and said, “Did you do an interview with Total Access that you didn’t tell me about?”
He laughed and said, “No,” then went on to say he’d never forget to tell me about an interview like that. Unfortunately for him, he lost that argument, because I have proof!
Luke tends to leave out details in our conversations. I often find out about things by eavesdropping on his phone conversations with his dad or brothers. Between Luke’s mom and me, we piece together what we hear on either end of the phone and can usually glean a lot of good information.
There’s one incident, however, that takes the cake …
On a cold Saturday night during our rookie season in Cleveland, Ohio, I hibernated in the house flipping channels while Luke traveled with the team. As I scrolled through the channel listings, I stumbled across a show about the Cleveland Browns. I’d never heard of it, so I decided to check it out.
Low and behold, what are they talking about? Luke McCown. I didn’t have time to record it. So, I paid very close attention, trying to absorb every detail.
The more I watched, though, the scarier it became. Keep in mind, I had no idea this program even existed until that moment, and as far as I knew, someone had simply done an interview with Luke and made a little story out of it.
That was until pictures from our wedding started showing up all over the television screen. How on earth did these people get pictures of our wedding?
I didn’t give them any pictures. Luke didn’t even know where the wedding photos were, so I knew he couldn’t have handed them over. Just how much did these people know about us? And how were they getting their hands on such private information?
Next, they showed clips from a dunk contest Luke won in high school. These clips were from a video I had never even seen.
The story was great, and I enjoyed watching all about Luke, but I my heart was beginning to beat a little faster. The minute Luke called I asked him about it. “Did you know about this? How did they get our wedding pictures? Did you know they had film from the dunk contest?”
With absolutely no alarm in his voice he answered, “Yes.” Apparently, he put the show’s producers in touch with his mom, and she sent them all those things.
Though it relieved my fluttering heart to hear that, I could NOT believe he left me completely out of the loop on all of this. After some firm comments about how he needs to tell me about things like this, Luke swore up and down he did, in fact, tell me. You can pick your side, but I’ll tell you right now he’s wrong.
I’ll cut him some slack, though. New wife, new job, new town. He was probably just trying to remember how to get home that day!
