7 Verses to Pray for Your Kids
“… continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” Philippians 2:12
I tucked my little girl into bed and began to pray like most every night. My heart leaped when she whispered the words with me …
“May she love you Lord with all her heart, and all her soul, and all her strength, and all her mind.”
I memorized that verse as a little girl and from the depths of my heart I desire that my children will love Jesus with their whole heart and life. So, I found myself speaking this Scripture in prayer over my children.
What I didn’t realize – this habit planted God’s Word in their little hearts. And now I watch as it grows roots.
At 3 years old, my daughter not only knows this Scripture, she takes comfort in it. If I try to change it up one night, she quickly reminds me I didn’t pray this verse.
As God shed light on the impact of His Words through my prayers, I committed to pray His word more for my children. Here are some of the Scriptures He prompts my heart to pray:
“May she love you Lord with all her heart, and all her soul, and all her strength, and all her mind.” {Luke 10:27}
“Let him trust in you LORD with all of his heart and lean not on his own understanding. In all his ways, may he acknowledge you, and let you direct his paths.” {Proverbs 3:5-6}
“I pray she will pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and gentleness.” {1 Timothy 6:11}
“May he grow in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man.” {Luke 2:52}
“May she set her mind on things above, not on earthly things.” {Colossians 3:2}
“I pray he will be like an oak of righteousness planted for the splendor of your glory.” {Isaiah 61:3}
“Let the words of her mouth and meditations of her heart be pleasing to you, Lord.” {Psalm 19:14}
My parenting will be full of mistakes, but God promises His Word will not return void. His Words hold more power than mine ever will. So I pray His Word and weave His love deep into my children’s hearts, confident it will be a lamp to their feet and a light to their path. {Psalm 119:105}
If God leads, jot down these Scriptures, or ask Him to reveal specific ones for you to pray out loud with your children, grandchildren, or any other children He places in your care.

Great post and such a powerful way to pray for our kids, others and self. This reminds me of something God put on my heart a couple of Christmas’s back – I called it “A Scripture for the Stockings” – The first year God led me to a Proverb from each ones birthday month, I wrote it out and then committed to pray it over the year. Just yesterday on the 27th, the date for my 7 year old daughter, we read the chapter and paused at verse 2 – “Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth; an outside and not your own lips.” She remembered that verse and it was a timely discussion as she starts softball next week. Like you said, His Word will not return void!!
I’ve jotted down the verses you shared and will add them to my list! Thanks for sharing!
LOVE this idea! And what a great testimony to God’s promise that His word does not return void!
it is so funny how even through your written word I can hear your voice and the spirit moving within you. I cannot even begin to describe the rejoicing I am having this morning over reading this post. If my heart rejoices this much, I cannot even fathom the rejoicing of God’s heart to hear his word being shared with HIS precious little ones and being proclaimed from their very lips. I have fallen in LOVE with Psalm 103, especially the passion translation (mainly because I have a poetic heart and it just flows ha!). I guess I really needed to hide in my heart what A FATHER’S LOVE truly looks like. I continually go back to verse 18 – “Your faithfulness to keep every gracious promise you’ve made passes from parents, to children, to grandchildren, and beyond! You are faithful to all those who follow Your ways and keep Your word.” We serve and AWESOME GOD. HUGS from the cox family
I could see your wonderful smile while I read your words! I soaked in Psalm 103 this morning after reading your comment. So so blessed to “hear” from you today, Dana!
Thank you for sharing these verses with us. Since my kids were little, I have prayed many scriptures over them. Two of my favorites are
the armor of God from Ephesians 6: “Equip my children with Your Armor, Father…helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness, the belt of truth, the sword of the Spirit, the shield of faith and the shoes of the gospel of peace.”
The other from several places in Scripture: “Father, grow them in wisdom and stature and favor with God and with man.”
My son, Bo, was like your daughter. He loved when we prayed that and by age three, he was praying it with me!!!
Still today at 16 and 21 I pray the second prayer for them and with them. And when God has answered this prayer, I point it out each and every time to reveal to them how God is working in their lives to grow them in wisdom, stature and favor. (good grades, making the team, teacher comments on report cards, special honors)…always wanting them to see every good and perfect gift we receive is from God!
Blessings,
Wendy
Yes! Awesome point to show our children when God answers our prayers! I will tuck that in my memory bank and ask God for a Spirit sensitive to His answers.
