Wednesday Work Out: When You Hear Your Name

| |

“… continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” Philippians 2:12

When you hear your name what do you do?

From an early age we train our children to do two things when they hear us call them:

Look at me and say, “Yes mam.”

As God increased our numbers, I learned quickly how vital is was to grab my kids’ attention. If I did not get their eyes and ears the outcome turned ugly. Voice raised. Patience shot.

By teaching them to look at me their eyes must leave anything else competing for their attention. By encouraging them to say, “Yes mam,” they must acknowledge who they’re listening to and tangibly offer their ears.

With eyes and ears engaged, the heart becomes more accessible.

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ Then I said, ‘Here I am! Send me.’” Isaiah 6:8 (ESV)

I see this same idea at work between me and my Father. Oh that I would offer God the same eyes and ears I seek from my own children.

Instead, I wave off the call of my name. I hear you, God. Give me a minute. I’ll be right there.

Or I’m so engaged in my current activity I ignore the call completely. Subtly suggesting my plan is more important.

When I call my kids it’s always for their good. I may have a job to help them grow. I may see a danger and desire to keep them out of harm’s way. I may want to surprise them with something special.

If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” Matthew 7:11 (ESV)

Lord, give me ears so sensitive to your voice I cannot miss it. No matter what I do or where I go may I long to here my name drip off your lips. And may I run to you with the words, Here I am! Send me!
