5 Back to School Verses to Pray for Your Kids

Hi to all of my friends stopping by from Encouragement for Today. I’m so glad you’re here!

Today is the first day of school for my kids … and when I say first day, I mean first day.

We’ve homeschooled our kids for the last 5 years – until today. So, you can imagine all of the emotions my heart has cascaded leading up to this day.

I’ve felt excited and overwhelmed. Devastated and scared. I’ve smiled and laughed and cried and hid under my covers. (Only once, though.)

Through each new day and every emotion, one thing has steadied me.

One thing has calmed my fears, controlled my tears and leveled the uncharted ground I tread.

That one thing is prayer.

I’ve brought my fears to Jesus’ feet and voiced my concerns at His throne. I’ve recited His promises over and over, believing my faith would grow as I forced my eyes on Him.

You may not be treading brand new ground this year, but transition is always a part of raising our kids. So, wherever you are, I wanted to share some of my favorite Scriptures to pray for my kids. I’ve chosen 5 because there’s 5 school days in a week. You can pray one each day or all 5 every day, but one thing I know.

We can always cover our kids in prayer.

Prayer is more powerful than our best preparation and more effective than our greatest worry.

With that in mind, here are 5 back to school Scriptures to pray for your kids:

“Lord Jesus, may {name} not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but may she be transformed by the renewing of her mind, so she can know Your good, pleasing and perfect will for her. Show me how I can help her daily transform her mind.” (Romans 12:2)

“Dear God, I pray that {name} will trust in You and fix his eyes on You, and as he does I pray You will keep him in perfect peace.” (Isaiah 26:3) P.S. I pray this one for me, too!

“Lord, help {name} fix his eyes on Jesus. May he throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles and run with perseverance the race marked out for him.” (Hebrews 12:1-2)

“Dear God, may {name} be the light of the world. May she be like a city on a hilltop that can’t be hidden, bringing Your light and love to all she encounters. May her good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise You, Heavenly Father.” (Matthew 5:14)

“Dear Jesus, please help {name} not be led astray and enticed by his own evil desires, but instead, I pray that his roots will grow down into Your love and that he will have the power to understand how wide, how long, how high, and how deep Your love is for him.” (James 1:14, Ephesians 3:17-18)

I’m praying for you today as you lead your kids through life. In case you’re struggling with fear and anxiety, I’d love to send you 15 of my go-to Scriptures to fight fear and anxiety. Click here to have them emailed to you.

I’d love to hear how you will use these verses! Leave a comment and tell me how you’ll incorporate these into your school year. And be sure to share these with a friend who might need them!

  1. This was the perfect thing for me to read this morning. I am also sending my son to public school for the first time this year and he starts next week, and I am fighting the mama anxiety. I am going to write these prayers down and use them all year! Thank you!

  2. It’s our first day of school also. I’m more fearful this year because my son is a senior, my first daughter is a junior and my baby girl is a freshman. They are all in the same school and it’s scary and comforting at the same time. Thank you for your post and as always, my Proverbs 31 daily devotion in my email is so applicable to my life today. Praying your children have a wonderful introduction to their new school.

    1. Thank you so much for your prayers, Michelle! We had a great first week of school. I pray you and your kiddos also experience peace, excitement and anticipation for this new school year.

  3. Goodness- both this AND the P31 Devo today were just what I needed. So grateful when God gives those little nudges that He hears my worries and fears and He’s got it all under control. Sent my first baby off to college a little over a week and a half ago and even though I know we have done what we could with what we knew while raising her, and we have entrusted her life to the Lord, I keep finding myself wondering if she remembers things I have warned her about. Safety things mostly, because she is so beautifully responsible and independent. But I needed this to just remind me to get on my knees now more than ever and keep giving these fears back to God. I hope all went well with your little ones and school! Xoxo

    1. Hi Shelley, I know exactly what you’re talking about with those little nudges. God is so good to remind us He hears us! Praying for you and your daughter!

  4. Last year was awful for my daughter, she grew to dread school. This year she’s started with optimism and I’m the one full of dread. This is a great reminder that I can be praying instead of just worrying. Also preparing for the IEP meeting will help. Thank you!

    1. Hi Christina, I’m praying for you and your daughter in this new school year. I pray you both experience God’s peace, provision and blessing!

  5. Hi Katy,
I really appreciate the 5 Back to School Scripture prayers. I am returning to school this year and will be praying the scripture prayers over myself as a child of God. I feel more reassured and confident in the Lord and His Presence as I embark on this new time in my life. This should hopefully help me get better grades also {smile} Glory be to God. Thank you for the support and the prayer suggestions.

  6. Thanks for sharing!! Love these. I shared, saved, and bookmarked it. I will use these to pray over my son, Sean, my daughter, Lillian, my nephew, Gabe, other family, and many friends! Thank you!!!
    With His love and blessings,
    Leslie

  7. Hello Katy! I just happened to connect to your blog for the first time through the emails that I stated getting once I was connected to P31 and I am so grateful to have gotten the added blessing of your posts as well. I plan on placing each of my children’s names into each of these verses, writing them on note cards, and then sending them/giving them to each of them to place on their metal rings that I have given them to keep track of all the notecards I send/give each of them. Sometimes the card is a verse I want to share, other times it’s a quote of inspiration or encouragement and still other times it’s a prayer for them that I have written myself. What I love about doing this is that it becomes a place for them to go and gain the support and/or direction they need in moments when they are not with me. Our son is a sophomore in college and just got his first apartment and our daughter started her Senior year! Looking forward to following your posts and thank you!

  8. Thank you for taking time to share these 5 prayers. We have 2 in college- our first is local and living at home and our 2nd away for her first year. Our prayers for them are very similar to the verses written but it is so powerful to pray scripture. I am specifically praying they will be in the Word daily and make it a priority to spend time with God in prayer because I know how life goes and things get busy. We are praying they surround themselves with friends who are striving for the same goals and beliefs and that they reach out to others with the love of Christ. Thank you again. Praying for you and your family as you transition and adjust to this new stage in your lives as well.
