Transforming Love Brings Freedom
*As we look towards July 4th, I invited the ladies of Fashion & Compassion to share what they’ve learned about freedom, and how they are fighting to bring freedom to women around the world. I hope you enjoy this guest post from Celeste Bundy and her team. And look for the special offer for my readers at the end of the post!
This probably won’t surprise you but there is a lack of love in the world.
We’ve been downloaded with sin causing our default mindset to be focused on ourselves and what is best for us, rather than on others and what is best for them. When you really think about it, this lack of love is what leads to a lack of freedom.
I see this lack of freedom in the lives of women around the world in the poverty they live in, the dignity they’ve been stripped of and the oppression and injustice they face each day just trying to make ends meet. These women have been used and abused for the benefit of others – to bring temporal pleasure, to earn money, to work, to care for children.
They have not felt loved for the unique person that God has created them to be and have become a slave to the identity the world has given them… prostitute, unwed mother, victim, immigrant, poor.
At Fashion & Compassion, our heart’s desire is to bring dignity & FREEDOM to these women through love. We love them, teach them a new skill, encourage them to explore who God created them to be and they earn real money in a safe and caring environment where they can even bring their kids if they need to. Earning money legitimately and building relationships with other women in a positive environment helps these women begin to challenge the lies that have kept them a slave… that they aren’t worth anything.
We begin to open a door that allows the women to start thinking of themselves differently. When they begin to start thinking of themselves differently and begin to understand that there is a God who loves them, transformation can begin.
Coming to know Christ is the first step in our ultimate transformation process (sanctification). John 8:31-32 says,
If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you FREE.”
It is through knowing Christ and the process of learning and applying teaching from God’s Word that ultimately brings us freedom. Naturally this is true for all people, but we see in verses like Isaiah 61:1 that God has a special place in His heart for those who have been oppressed:
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,”
The challenges these women face are formidable and they typically don’t embrace their TRUE identity overnight. Transformation is a slow process of replacing lies with the truth because the truth is what will ultimately set us all free!
